Odysseus refused to sleep in a regular bed so he lays down on a sheep skin and he can't sleep. Athene appears to him while he's trying to sleep. He asks her how to get his hands on the suitors since they are outnumbered and how he escapes vengeance if he kills the suitors. Athene tells him that they would succeed together no matter how many people wanted to kill them. She tells him to go to sleep. When Penelope wakes up from a dream where Odysseus was next to her in bed, she prays to Artemis because she wants to either die or go to the avenging furies. She can't stand having to marry a man lesser than Odysseus. The suitors decide to scratch their plan in killing Telemachus because a bird of omen flies over on their left telling them that they would fail. So, when Odysseus is back with the suitors in the palace, Ctesippus takes a cow hoof throws it at Odysseus and he dodges it. Telemachus says that it was good the cow hoof didn't hit Odysseus because he would have killed Ctesippus with a spear if he had. And when they are eating dinner, Theoclymenus sees the suitors looking like they are about to go to the halls of Hades (a.k.a. die).
